Harvest Festival

On Tuesday morning the whole school made their way to St Stephen’s Church for our annual Harvest Festival celebration. We were greeted by Reverend Dan and Deacon Belinda (who has just joined the team at St Stephen’s.) Our theme for this year was ‘Taking Care of the Poor’. We began by looking at how a farmer grows crops with Year 2 singing ‘The farmer comes to scatter the seed’. Year 6 explained how crops were harvested in the past by scythe and sickle until the invention of the combine harvester, with Year 1 singing ‘Big red combine harvester’. This led on to the story of Ruth and Naomi, from the book of Ruth in the Old Testament, where Ruth was able to collect the surplus crops from the fields during the harvest so as not to go hungry. Year 5 told this story in rhyme.

Year 4 told us about the origins of the Food Bank and how that helps hungry people in the present day. Then Year 3 told the New Testament story of the greedy farmer who had so much surplus grain he had to knock down his barns and build bigger ones to store it in, instead of sharing it with others. Year 6 led us in harvest prayers and Reverend Dan gave us a general blessing before we finished with our favourite Harvest song ‘Harvest Samba’.

We have collected a huge number of items for the Food Bank already at school, but if you still have something to give please bring it in to school by Tuesday 18th as Mrs Carter will be off to the Food Bank on Wednesday and will let us know the weight of our collection!
